Most expensive Pokemon Card. Guess How much? $100? – no, higher; $1000? no, higher; $10,000? even higher

June 25, 2008

My dad and I were returning from the temple today and chatting about different things and the question came up as to what is the most expensive Pokemon card?

I am pretty sure that the most expensive Pokemon card is Pikachu Illustrator.

Apparently, only 6 of these were produced. CoroCoro magazine ran a competition for children to design a Pokemon Card. The six winners received one of these superb Holofoil trophy cards.

Cost — Tum-dudum-dum-dum

$20,000.00

The card text says:

We certify that your illustration is an excellent entry in the Pokémon Card Game Illustration Contest. Therefore, we state that you are an Officially Authorized Pokémon Card Illustrator and admire your skill.

The next most expensive card:

The rarest Pokemon card, but it is not the most expensive Pokemon card (I don’t know why) is Pikachu Tournament No 1 Gold Trophy.

The cost of this card, according to Greylight is:

$12,000.00

There are two other trophy cards (only 3 of each were produced) also sell for $10,000+

By the way, you can’t take these numbers too seriously (like everything else on the internet). Bulbopedia says that there were about 30 Pikachu Illustrator cards issued and I saw somewhere else that in 2002, the trophy cards had a book price of $1,500.

I have also heard about the Raichu PreRelease card that is supposed to be the rarest of them all.

The reason this card is rare is because it is an “error” card. The pre-release stamp on this card was placed by mistake.

There are either 8 or 11 of these cards and it hasn’t come up for sale as yet, but if it did, it might be the most expensive pokemon card.

Price: probably between $10,000 and $30,000.

The story behind this card can be found at PokeGym.

Pl. leave a comment if you know of any other expensive Pokemon Card and what is the most expensive Pokemon card you have purchased? The most expensive card I have purchased is Double Rainbow Energy for $6 each (I needed them for my Wailord Deck). I almost bought a Lv.X card for $15 but it didn’t fit in my deck.

  1. i had that last riachu card and my mom gave it away to goodwill.
i feel like i have to throw up!!!!!!

  2. hey justin was it a Prerelease like in the picture? If so, yeah I would throw up too. But if not, I would guess it would still sell for a lot.

  3. These pokemons that are supposidly rare are not really that good of cards i mean 80hp? there are way better cards out there with 200hp and instead of only 60 damage 200damage. These cardsa are rare but when it comes to battleing they are useless. They are only usless collector cards.

  4. Arosea, do you really think people care if a card has better hp and power? I mean, I’d rather have a weak collector’s card that sells for $10,000 than a stupid card with 200 attack and 200 damage thats only worth like $10.

  5. It has to be the very first pokemon ex card they created, ranging at about 50,000$-100,000$ it’s Raichu ex with 200 HP and an attack of 150 damage,It as well has an attack that does 10+ and CAN do 100.This card was a messup, they didd’nt try to make it how it turned out,my pokegym book says they tried to make it to have 100 HP and a 50 attack, but they only made one card and it’s in the hans of Kile Ghetti, who wont sell it for less than 75,000$.
    He lives in Texas Garland.

  6. hi Kile

  7. Hey I have a card that looks just likethat pikachu trophy how much can I get for it

  8. I always wanted to know what ever happened to the Mew Egyptian card the real one that everyone was looking for years ago … if anyone came across it how much is that card really worth? and why hasnt anyone come foward to solve the mystery of Mew!

  9. I remember WAY back in the day when that contest was run, I actually have the Corocoro mag/comic the contest ran in lol. And as for the one complaining about “how crappy the old cards are” back in the day nothin had over 100 hp, and nothing did over an average of 40-50 damage, granted some did 120 and some did 80, but back then was when the game was good. I played in the pokemon league back when i was 13 and I’m 20 now. I don’t play card game anymore but I keep updated. But I play the DS games! I’ll sit my 8 month son in my lap and we’ll play some pearl for hours lol. Anywho, these card bring back some old old memories and brought a smile to my face. But I think new series and trainers/players have lost some of the old values and love for the game we had when it launched. I will be selling some of my old old old school cards online soon. I have almost all the original promos message me at ssj4vegeta32000@hotmail.com for a list, I just, I mean just typed a list of my cards and I’d more than happy send a list of my cards for sale. Finally, for all those with the love of the game still, keep the old legacy going, do your best in tournaments, and just maybe, maybe I would send someone some old rare promos as a gift. Passing down the playing spirit of the #1 ranked pokemon player in the 1998 and 1999 pokemon league in Tennessee and 3 other states :) It truely has been a journey…

i have one of the original illustrator cards

  13. I actually have the Raichu. But it isn’t a mess up one. I don’t even like pokemon anymore. I used to play it and love it alot when I was like, 9. All I bought were pokemon cards. Now I have a lot of other rare ones. I think I might put them on ebay. But I would like to know how much my Mew Egyptian, Raichu (not mess up), irachi, and Entei cards are worth. I’ve been doing some research to see which of my cards I can sell for good money, and from what I’ve read, those ones are pretty rare.

Email me how much I could sell them for at: punkash1234@gmail.com

  14. I also played when I was 8-12 and I am 16 now. I saw the new decks the other week and I am freaking appalled. This game used to be so good now its a piece of s***. As for rare cards I own I have 5 full sets in complete first edition from base set. and about 12 sets that are missing only charizard. what do u reckon theyre worth. (let me tell you when i was 12 i was OBSESSED)

  15. Mew Egyptian, Entei and Jirachi. Really are not worth that much! Mew Egyptian $3,Entei $20-60 and Jirachi $15-20 and $30-40. GET LUGIA EX AND CHARIZARD* THOSE ARE $112!!!

I have two of the egyptian mew cards plus many more rare ones(latios and latias star, etc.). And the chimchar with the smudge on it that’s normal, many low level basic pokemon cards have that (turtwig, piplup etc.).An honor to have seen text written by you zian, awesome that you were the champion in 1998 and 1999. Nice job :)

I am freaking out right now after reading this! I have this exact card. Is there anyone that can direct me to a reputable person or organization that I may be able to sell or at least get an appraisal on my card.
    Thanks

  21. well I guess I made a right move, when pokemon first launched I bought a bunch regulars/holo’s/trainers all out of about 300 packs and put them away only touched once. It may actually pay off one day.

Dude I have a rare holographic lv.52 Giratina and I only paid $5 for it.

  25. One of the previous posts stated that they pulled a Chimchar with a black smudge where the energy cost should be and believed it was a misprint. Unfortunately that is not the case. In the new Diamond and Pearl/Platinum sets they now have Pokemon who do not require energy to use certain abilities. This is just another addition to the Poke-Power/Poke-Body saga. Like another poster stated, the way Pokemon used to play back in the day has been lost. Now players can deal hundreds of damage with the least amount of cards in play. I am 21 and my fiance and I have started playing the game again and actually played in a tournament. The gameplay has changed as well. There are no more hand limitations to how many cards you have, but the deck amount still stays at 60. However, now you can store more than just 4 of the same Pokemon. For instance if you have 4 Bulbasaurs in the deck, you may also store 4 more Bulbasaurs who have a trainer icon in their name. (Ex. Bulbasaur ‘G’ the ‘G’ standing for ‘Galactic’)

As for the promo cards, collector’s may be willing to pay top dollar for some of them, but more often than not people would rather pay for cards that can help them in gameplay. It would be nice to get some hands-on with those limited release cards, but there are newer cards that people are willing to do just about anything for.
